Sense of Place Artist Statement
My piece has two parts and both work to show my perspective that the Glen Canyon Dam in Page, AZ should stay in place. I believe the economic benefits of the dam far outweigh the slim environmental downfalls. Also, because I hold such a deep emotional and spiritual connection with the lake, it is difficult for me to advocate for the destruction of the dam that has made all of my memories possible. Lake Powell holds great personal value with me, and my first piece focuses on these emotional arguments to leave the dam in place. This is illustrated through a collage of numerous pictures of my previous trips to Lake Powell. The second piece of my project is an Info-Graphic, which focuses on statistics and evidence-based arguments to support the presence of the dam. Both of the pieces work together to convey my ultimate message as seen in my essay.
After many painful hours of brainstorming, I initially only created the Info-Graphic, illustrating the statistical side of my argument. This Info-Graphic went through many revisions itself, such as combing through the statistics to eliminate facts that didn’t support my opinion one way or another. However, after further contemplation, I decided to also create a picture collage to illustrate the more emotional side of my argument. I went through several stages of refinement in order to arrive at the final draft. I gradually added more pictures, eventually incorporating other people’s favorite pictures from their time at Lake Powell. Towards the end of the process, I synchronized the formatting of the two posters to ensure that they looked aesthetically pleasing when put together.
I had a serious lack of inspiration for my visual piece for this project. It was only after several conferences that I felt somewhat motivated to complete the project. While the majority of my inspiration came from Ashley, I was also inspired by the Info-Graphics on the website www.piktochart.com and by the one on Ashley’s wall titled Half the Sky. After creating that piece, I remembered Ashley’s idea to create a picture collage of my favorite memories from the lake. I added a few sentences to the top and bottom of the collage to clarify and strengthen the message I was trying to send.
