La Poesía de la Comida
For this project, everyone choose a country and chose an authentic food from that country. Then, we had to translate that recipe to Spanish and prepare the food for exhibition. The other component of this project was the ode. Based on the recipe we chose, we had to write an ode to an ingredient from that recipe in both english and spanish. At exhibition, we served our foods and read our poems to the public.
This was my favorite project this year in Spanish. My favorite part of this project was creating the ode. When we were writing our odes in Spanish, we were also writing our poems in Humanities, so the writing came rather easily to me. Also, the exhibition for this project was very popular and was very interesting. If I could re-do this project, I would keep the same country, but I would like to do a different dish. Instead of making a dessert, I would pick a main dish because I think they're more cultural.

Oda a la Calabaza / Ode to the Pumpkin
A pumpkin,
The symbol of the holdiays. The joyful shreiks of children At the patch in october Announcing their presence The king of the fall. Your ridges like crowns, Your shell guarding precious seeds That pop like firecrackers in my mouth Explosions of joy, Spices tingle on my tongue. Your sweet aroma like a Bird’s song bouncing in my ears Your stem, a sword that fights off all invaders, guarding precious seeds, gooey seeds that slip through my fingers, effortlessly. You bring laughter to a table Of jolly relatives with cheeks Rosy from the frosty winter air. You attract ghosts, witches, and superheroes to the porch, Their faces lit with joy Symmetrical to the expression Carved into yours. |

Arte y Lengua
Descripción del TrabajoDuring this project, we each chose a Spanish artist to study. Then, based off of the research we completed, we each wrote a three paragraph paper about the artist and his or her works. After they research was completed, we each chose one of the artist's pieces of art to base our own project off of. Then, we each painted an original piece of art resembling our artist's style.

This project was the perfect opportunity for me to practice writing in the past tense using both the preterite and the imperfect forms. I think that writing about someone was the best way to develop this skill. Also, I feel like through this project I have gained a greater respect for art. Before this project, I didn't have very much experience with painting on canvas. Now that I've painted on canvas, I've realized that it takes a lot more revision than painting on paper requires. Now matter how many times I went over my lines in similar or darker colors, there was always room for refinement. Even though I thought that my painting still needed refinement, I am still proud of my work. I spent a lot of time on my painting during this project and I am proud of the outcome.

Mi Cuento Infantil
During this project, we were to write and illustrate an original children's story. We were to use the vocabulary and other skills that we had learned throughout the year. My book was about a girl in Guatemala named Gabriela. As she chases a beautiful kite around Guatemala City, the culture of the city is shown through illustrations. My book is named: "La Cometa Bonita" or the Beautiful Kite. |
Listen to a recording or me reading my children's story about life in Guatemala City, Guatemala! |

Nacido No en el E.E.U.U Reflection
The most challenging part of this project was coming up with a storyline that would keep a child's interest. I remember being a child and only liking certain books because the other ones were boring. I din't want to bore the children at the exhibition, so I took extra time to come up with my idea that included a plot line and boasted the Guatemalan culture.
I am very proud of the outcome of this project. I feel like my book showed the Guatemalan culture through a storyline as compared to a story which describes the everyday life of a Guatemalan citizen. Although I am proud of my book, if I could do this project again, I would proofread my story a few more times before I put it in the blank book. When I was reading through the final product of my book, I found a few errors. To fix these errors I had to redo the pages altogether, which was very disappointing. Also, I would spend more time on my illustrations. There would be no stick figures and the overall look of the pages would look more aesthetically pleasing.
I think that my major issue with this project was the allotted amount of time. The reason that my pictures weren't very pretty and that the people are stick figures is the amount of time we were given. I do understand that the semester is coming to a close, but I feel like if we had started this project earlier while we were still learning new content, my book would be prettier with less errors.

Del Alma Exhibition Reflection
To exhibit our children's books, we went to a local after-school program for spanish-speaking children. We brought our books, split into groups, and read our books to the children. I think that this exhibition was a wonderful and unique idea, but when we arrived, it didn't play out exactly the way that it was intended to. To begin, the exhibition began at 3:45 and we were required to be in professional dress. To me, this seemed extremely unrealistic. I ended being late to the exhibition because my ride to the exhibition had to work and was late to pick me up.
By the time that we arrived at the exhibition, the reading had begun. Then, when I sat down to read to the first child, she didn't speak Spanish! We read the book to her in English. The children that we read to did like the books and I found that it helped me with my Spanish pronunciation and my grammar skills overall, but the exhibition wasn't necessarily beneficial to all of the children in attendance. Despite the small issues with this exhibition, the break from a traditional exhibition was enjoyable and unique and was overall a good experience.
